Enrichments & Electives
Brightening & Broadening Horizons
Beyond the classroom, Enrichment classes enhance student learning at the Primary school. As children enter Upper Elementary, they begin to choose Electives, which are classes for further enrichment, beyond the Montessori core curriculum. By the time students enter the Secondary program, Electives choices are in full bloom, preparing students for life in college, careers, and anywhere life takes them on their personal journey.
Primary Campus Enrichments & Electives
Integrated learning naturally occurs in a Montessori classroom and is enhanced at Elizabeth Academy with the guidance of Enrichment specialists. Montessori teachers integrate art into the teaching, which is fueled by sensorial learning in the Montessori curriculum, this ignites a fire for further development in Enrichment classes.
Our Enrichment program includes:
- The Arts (Visual Art, Music, Dance, Theater)
- Media Center (Research & Reading)
- Physical Education
- Many more Electives are also offered to our Upper Elementary students.
Secondary Campus Electives
The next step for adolescents, after they graduate from Middle and High School in the Secondary program, is to move on to college, careers, and more serious social relationships. The Electives offered at the Secondary campus are designed to prepare students for these next steps. Fun and engaging offerings that interweave core academic concepts and apply them to job training, careers, and social development are all part of the pleasurable package of Elizabeth Academy’s Electives.
Experiential Education
Elizabeth Academy Secondary students are future world changers. Our students spend considerable time taking their learning from the classroom to the community and visa versa. We embed learning experiences throughout our curriculum.
From our annual Service Week, before the Winter Break, to immersive literary and history experiences through the arts, like attending plays and exhibitions, we bring learning alive through experience. Our students also have the option to participate in school trips, taking learning far beyond the classroom!
A highlight and seminal event at Elizabeth Academy, Camp Oakley is located near Oakley by the beautiful and serene Weber River. This is where our whole secondary school gathers at the beginning of each school year, immersed in nature, to bond as friends and teachers— strengthening ties, staying over a few nights, camping, hiking, and fishing in the wilderness— laughing and learning along the way. This community-building event takes place the first few weeks of school, and is always a favorite among students and staff!
Our field experiences, like field trips, are all curriculum-aligned. Students go on local excursions to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the subjects they are studying in the classroom. Field experiences bring the learning to life- and allow students to see the application of the concepts they study in the real world. Additionally, we believe in providing practical opportunities such as volunteerism or internships. This exposure generates interest and whets the appetite for potential vocations in the future.
The purpose of Spring Trips is to take learning beyond the classroom and strengthen our community. We venture to places like Boston, Washington D.C., and Gettysburg to gain a deeper understanding of US History and Government. The middle school explores wilderness areas all over Utah and learns about the diversity of Utah wildlife, discovering its geological secrets and beauty. Our high school dives deeply into marine sciences on Catalina Island in California. All of our classroom studies are integrated into these final explorations outside the classroom in our end-of-year trips!
Peer Mentoring & Leadership
Some of us are born to be leaders, but all of us are born to be contributors. Peer mentoring is something we all can do, especially at Elizabeth Academy, and leadership is strengthened intentionally through our Peer Mentoring program and Student Government at Elizabeth Academy.
Honors Credit Through Service
Advanced students earn honors credits by serving as classroom guides, gaining hands-on leadership experience that sets them apart in college applications and beyond.
Sharpened Skills Through Teaching
When students are tasked with teaching others, their own academic skills and social-emotional intelligence deepen in ways that traditional instruction alone cannot achieve.
Leaders Who Lift Others
Our peer mentoring program develops the kind of leaders who don't just excel themselves — they help others discover and share their own potential.
Prepared For Life After School
Beginning in Middle School, students at Elizabeth Academy Secondary are guided to prepare for life after high school. Job skills are taught and vocational interests are piqued, preparatory to offerings that might be included in High School studies (vocational courses at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) for certificates that can be applied to college credit, concurrent enrollment for credit at SLCC or the University of Utah).
Micro-economy courses are offered and our College and Careers program explores options and opportunities for further educational pursuits and/or occupations so that students are prepared to leave our school with the confidence they need to embark upon their own personal post-secondary journey.
